When it comes to football season, everyone, and we mean everyone, dons their finest dress. Even our four legged friends support their teams on Game Day. For our families, we yell “Go Dawgs!” and have perfected the mighty tomahawk chop.
We really wish we could claim this brilliant idea, but Daughter actually spotted this pattern at a craft festival and stored it for a rainy day project. Most people use a simple square fabric piece to tie around a pet’s neck for a simple, cute accessory. This simple DIY Dog Collar Bound Bandana needs slightly more effort but the result is an Oprah ‘A Ha’ moment. The bandanas actually slip over the dog’s collar to stay in place! Genius!
DIY Dog Collar Bound Bandana Tutorial
Two Pieces of Coordinating Fabric (roughly 11″ x 12″ for a large dog)
Embellishments (buttons, patches, etc)
For reference, our dogs weigh 55 pounds and 85 pounds so these measurements would be considered Large. You can get the overall pattern and adjust the measurements to fit your dog.
The most important measurement is the bottom rectangle portion. For our smaller dog, we measured 4 inches since her collar was 2 inches at the widest part. For our larger dog, we used a 5 1/2 inch measurement. You’ll want to provide enough room in your pocket for the collar to slip through easily.
We also used 11 inches across since our dogs are on the larger side. If you have a smaller dog, you’ll want to decrease the overall width.
We used two coordinating fabrics to add some flair but you can also use the same design on both sides. We love the idea of reversal bandanas! Once you’ve cut your two pieces, place them right side facing and sew around the sides of the triangle and up the straight edge roughly 3/4 of the way. You’ll want leave a small opening to reverse the bandana right side out.
After you have sewn around the bandana and turned the fabric right side out, iron the seams flat. Flip the bottom portion up half way and iron flat.
Sew along the edge of the bottom portion, creating a pocket for the collar.
To finish off the bandanas, we hot glued a Braves and UGA logo button. This is completely optional and you can add any embellishment.
