{DIY} Ballard Designs Inspired Painted Welcome Mat

This week, we decided to post a few of our recent projects that were inspired by Pinterest. We have two success stories and one that did not meet expectations. However, for today, we are sharing one of our new favorite projects. It now ranks right behind our DIY Photo Canvas project! We’ve created another version of the {DIY} Painted Welcome Mat.

In our original post, we mentioned that we wanted to replicate the $60 welcome mat from Ballard Designs for Georgia’s husband and Daughter’s father’s (Dad) birthday.

Ballard Designs Suzanne Kasler Antler Welcome MatWell today is his birthday! Dad is an avid outdoors man and this will fit perfectly on his back porch where he sits every night watching the backyard wildlife. Again, the steps are exactly the same as the {DIY} Painted Welcome Mat.

First, print your desired design on card stock.

Deer Head Stencil

Next, cut out the stencil and tape it to the mat using painters tape.

Use a round sponge brush and a lot of craft paint to create the outline. Remove the stencil and saturate the entire design. You may need to use 2 to 3 coats of paint to fully develop the design.

Here is the design with the stencil removed and three layers of paint.

While we really liked the deer head, the overall mat was a little boring so we decided to add a thick border. We simply used painters tape to create the border.

After removing the border tape, the {DIY} Ballard Designs Inspired Welcome Mat was complete! We think Dad will love it!
